NATO’s top Military Authority, the NATO Military Committee, held its annual conference with Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, the Chair, leading discussions among 32 Allied Chiefs of Defence and two Strategic Commanders. They focused on next steps from the recent NATO Summit in Ankara, emphasizing the need to enhance collective deterrence and defense, along with innovation and technology, particularly in support of Ukraine.
Admiral Cavo Dragone pointed out the key goals of the conference, stressing that NATO leaders would work on delivering capabilities that strengthen defense while transitioning from budget commitments. He highlighted the urgency to improve deterrence, technological advances, and rapid adoption of new defense strategies. During a joint press conference, he expressed solidarity among Allied forces in response to recent aggressive actions by Russia, affirming NATO’s readiness to defend all allied territories.
General Michael Wiggers Hyldgaard also spoke, reiterating Allies’ commitment to enhancing the Alliance and supporting Ukraine to maintain freedom and security. Key topics discussed included implementing NATO Summit decisions, boosting readiness, and sending strong messages to the defense industry about meeting needs effectively and quickly.
A significant outcome of the conference was the election of General Carsten Breuer, Chief of Defence of Germany, as the next Chair of the NATO Military Committee, starting in summer 2027 for a three-year term. The committee meets regularly, with the next plenary planned for January 2027 in Brussels.
