Russia launched a significant missile and drone attack on Ukraine, leading to at least 20 deaths and revealing Ukraine’s shortage of U. S.-made interceptors. This assault occurred just before a NATO summit where U. S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to discuss peace efforts. Ukraine’s military failed to intercept any of the 23 ballistic missiles fired, highlighting its vulnerability as its supply of Patriot missiles dwindles.
Zelenskiy has called for more interceptors, noting that they are essential for defending against ballistic missiles. As the NATO summit approaches in Turkey, he urged for “strong decisions” to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Previous air defense data showed that Ukraine intercepted only a small fraction of incoming missiles in recent attacks, which has raised concerns about ongoing destruction from Russian strikes.
The latest attack resulted in at least 14 deaths in Kyiv and six in the surrounding areas, with many injuries reported and extensive damage to nearly 30 buildings. Rescue efforts continued as teams searched through rubble for survivors. One young woman, Alyona, expressed anxiety about her missing friend, emphasizing the human toll of the violence.
Russia’s defense ministry claimed responsibility for this large-scale attack, targeting military and energy facilities in Kyiv and nearby areas. As Russia’s battlefield progress falters, it has intensified its aerial assaults, although Ukraine has reclaimed some territory and conducted successful strikes against Russian oil refineries and military targets far from the front lines.
