U. S. forces targeted Iranian coastal radar sites after shooting down drones launched by Iran, which were believed to threaten maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. This incident complicates ongoing efforts to resolve tensions between the U. S. and Iran. The U. S. Central Command reported the strikes on Iranian surveillance locations on Goruk and Qeshm Island. Iran’s foreign ministry stated that these U. S. actions violated a ceasefire and indicated that Washington is not interested in reducing tensions, warning of consequences for such actions.
In retaliation, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed to have attacked U. S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, as well as fired upon four tankers in the strait. Meanwhile, Kuwait’s military reported intercepting seven ballistic missiles from Iran that caused material damage but no casualties. Kuwait and Bahrain condemned the Iranian missile strikes, labeling them as aggressive acts threatening regional security. Iran claimed it successfully hit U. S. bases with missiles, but the U. S. stated that six of the missiles were intercepted.
While U. S. and Iranian officials have been engaging in indirect discussions for an interim deal to halt the war, a resolution appears distant. Iran seeks the release of frozen oil revenues, lifted sanctions on crude exports, and more control over the Strait of Hormuz, which has been crucial for global oil transit. Reports indicated that Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan’s interior minister, was traveling to Tehran to communicate a message from Pakistan to Iranian leadership.
U. S. President Donald Trump is under increasing pressure domestically over rising gas prices, as he noted that while many Iranian missile facilities had been destroyed, Iran retains a portion of its missiles and drones. He attributed Iran’s resistance to negotiating a deal to their national pride and strength. Following the initiation of the war against Iran, Tehran has retaliated against Gulf states hosting U. S. military bases and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, leading to increased oil prices and supply chain issues.
The United Nations reported that conflict has worsened hunger for many due to rising transportation costs. An adviser to Iran’s supreme leader stated that reaching a peace deal depends on the U. S. unfreezing $24 billion in Iranian assets, cautioning that further U. S. attacks could lead to severe consequences.
Furthermore, in Lebanon, an Israeli strike resulted in the deaths of two Lebanese army officers and a soldier, with Hezbollah denouncing it as part of Israel’s aggressive actions. Hezbollah has stated that any peace agreement with the U. S. must include a ceasefire with Israel, which has faced rejection due to the lack of provisions regarding Israeli withdrawal.
