Ukraine is facing a new challenge in its air war with Russia as Moscow rapidly expands its use of faster, jet powered attack drones.
In July, Ukraine invited a large group of domestic manufacturers to test a new generation of interceptor drones designed to stop the weapons. But the exercise exposed major difficulties. Several interceptor drones struggled to remain under control at speeds exceeding 400 kilometres per hour, with some crashing before reaching their targets.
The problem comes as Ukraine prepares for another difficult winter, already facing shortages of Western supplied air defence missiles needed to counter Russian ballistic missiles.

Russia has sharply increased its use of jet powered drones in recent months. Ukrainian military data cited by Reuters shows that Russia launched about 450 drones travelling between 240 and 500 kilometres per hour in June. By August, that number had risen to around 2,850.
The shift represents a significant evolution from the slower, propeller driven Shahed drones that Russia has used extensively since 2022.
Why it matters
Ukraine had developed increasingly effective methods to counter conventional Shahed drones, with interception rates reaching around 90%.
The emergence of faster jet powered versions is disrupting that advantage.
These drones can travel at more than twice the speed of many earlier models, giving Ukrainian air defences less time to detect, track and intercept them. Some can also change their flight path and altitude during an attack, making them more difficult to predict.
The challenge is particularly serious for Kyiv and Odesa, which have faced some of the heaviest attacks. Kyiv has been repeatedly targeted by waves of jet powered drones, while Odesa is strategically important as a major hub for Ukraine’s maritime exports.
Ukrainian officials expect the number of jet powered drones used in Russian attacks to continue increasing.
Russia’s evolving drone strategy
The development reflects a broader pattern in the war: every major improvement in one side’s weapons has prompted the other side to develop a countermeasure.
Russia initially relied heavily on relatively cheap, slow moving Shahed type drones to overwhelm Ukrainian air defences. Ukraine gradually developed low cost interceptor drones that could destroy many of them without consuming expensive Western air defence missiles.
Russia has now responded by increasing speed, improving guidance systems and introducing technology designed to make the drones more resistant to electronic warfare.
Some jet powered drones are reportedly equipped with advanced antenna systems that make them harder to disrupt through GPS jamming.
The result is an increasingly sophisticated contest between offensive and defensive technology.
Ukraine’s interceptor problem
Ukraine already has more than 1,000 trained interceptor drone crews, while more than 60 Ukrainian companies are reportedly working on solutions for jet powered drones.
But developing an interceptor is not enough. It must also be cheap enough to deploy in large numbers, fast enough to catch its target and reliable enough to operate under combat conditions.
That combination has proved difficult.
Some Ukrainian prototypes have struggled with speed and control. Others are reportedly too large or complicated to deploy quickly when the window for interception may last only seconds.
Ukraine’s existing interceptor drones can sometimes destroy jet powered drones when they slow down to manoeuvre, but this advantage could disappear as Russia improves the drones’ onboard systems.
A search for cheaper solutions
Ukraine is exploring several alternatives.
One option is a new generation of low cost guided missiles that could destroy jet powered drones without using expensive Western air defence interceptors designed for much more sophisticated threats.
Another approach involves adapting existing interceptor drones to attack incoming weapons head on rather than attempting to chase them from behind.
That would require sophisticated automated targeting systems capable of calculating the trajectory of a rapidly approaching drone and guiding the interceptor into its path.
Ukrainian officials say some successful head on interceptions have already been achieved using automated guidance systems and manually piloted drones.
Electronic warfare is another part of the effort. Ukraine has previously disrupted Russian drones by manipulating their navigation signals, but more advanced jet powered systems are becoming increasingly resistant to such methods.
Some Ukrainian defence companies are therefore advocating a networked approach in which multiple systems work together to detect, track and redirect incoming drones.
The growing pressure on Kyiv
The problem is becoming more urgent because Ukraine cannot rely indefinitely on its existing air defence architecture.
Western supplied missile systems remain essential for protecting Ukrainian cities from ballistic missiles, but their stocks are limited and they are too expensive to be used routinely against large numbers of relatively inexpensive drones.
This creates an economic problem as much as a military one.
If Russia can produce thousands of relatively cheap drones while forcing Ukraine to respond with far more expensive missiles, Moscow can gradually place pressure on Ukraine’s air defence resources even when individual attacks are intercepted.
Ukraine’s push toward cheap interceptor drones is therefore an attempt to change that calculation.
Implications and analysis
Russia’s jet powered drone campaign highlights how quickly the technological balance of the Ukraine war can change.
Ukraine had spent years developing effective countermeasures against conventional Shahed drones, but Russia’s decision to increase speed has reduced the effectiveness of some of those systems.
This creates a dangerous cycle. Russia can respond to Ukrainian defensive innovations with faster and more sophisticated drones, while Ukraine must develop new interceptors before the existing systems become obsolete.
The immediate concern is Ukraine’s ability to protect major cities and critical infrastructure through another winter of heavy Russian attacks. But the implications extend beyond Ukraine.
The conflict is increasingly becoming a testing ground for low cost autonomous weapons, electronic warfare, artificial intelligence and networked air defence. Lessons from the battlefield are likely to influence military planning far beyond Europe.
The economic dimension could ultimately prove just as important as the technological one. Ukraine cannot afford to destroy inexpensive drones indefinitely with extremely expensive missiles. Russia, meanwhile, has an incentive to exploit that imbalance through mass attacks.
Ukraine’s most promising response may therefore be not a single breakthrough weapon but a layered system combining cheap interceptor drones, guided missiles, electronic warfare and automated targeting.
The race is ultimately about more than catching faster drones. It is about whether Ukraine can develop an affordable defensive system quickly enough to prevent Russia’s latest technological advantage from becoming a sustained strategic one.
