The United States and Iran have created an outline agreement to extend their ceasefire, awaiting approval from President Donald Trump. This follows an attack by Iran on a U. S. air base in Kuwait after U. S. strikes aimed at an Iranian drone operation. The agreement includes a 60-day truce and discussions about Iran’s nuclear program. However, it still requires Trump’s approval.
Recent attacks have shown how fragile the negotiations are to change the temporary ceasefire into a permanent solution to a conflict that has lasted three months and caused many deaths. The U. S. Central Command reported that its forces downed five Iranian drones and attacked a control station set to launch more. Kuwait has also intercepted a missile aimed at its territory and condemned Iran’s actions, calling for an end to the escalation.
The recent violence occurred during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s foreign minister is scheduled to meet with U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, although the importance of this meeting is unclear. In Lebanon, Israel has begun striking at targets linked to Iran-backed Hezbollah militants.
