Singapore invites bids for next‑gen hydrogen‑ready gas power plants

Singapore's Energy Market Authority has invited private sector proposals to construct hydrogen-ready combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) units, which are expected to be operational in 2031 and 2032.

Singapore’s Energy Market Authority has invited private sector proposals to construct hydrogen-ready combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) units, which are expected to be operational in 2031 and 2032.

The units will supplement renewable energy sources as Singapore continues to require gas in the medium term, especially following disruptions in energy supplies from the Middle East.

The private sector will be responsible for building, owning, and operating these units, with each designed to provide at least 600 megawatts of capacity. In 2031, Singapore’s peak energy demand is projected to reach between 9.6 gigawatts and 11.4 gigawatts.

Currently, 95% of the country’s electricity comes from imported natural gas, with a portion sourced from Qatar. Singapore is considering increasing its reserves of natural gas and diesel, despite the expense involved.
