Explosives described as having “devastating power” were discovered near the Turkstream pipeline in Serbia, which transports Russian gas to Hungary and other regions, according to leaders from both countries.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic informed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about the find, stating that he would keep Orban updated on the investigation.
Orban announced an extraordinary defense council meeting following the news. This incident occurs just a week before crucial elections on April 12 in Hungary, where Orban is trying to maintain his over 16-year rule while facing challenges from the opposition Tisza party.
In February, Orban had already increased security around energy infrastructure. Budapest is also in conflict with Ukraine over oil supply issues. Orban’s Fidesz party has attempted to link the opposition with pro-war sentiments.
