UN meeting: Nations slam Russia’s ongoing Ukraine violations

Dozens of mostly Western countries supported Ukraine and condemned Russian aggression during a U. N. meeting in Geneva, marking the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy encouraged allies to continue their support amid disagreements in Europe over new sanctions against Russia. Norway’s foreign minister, Espen Barth Eide, stated that Russia’s actions violate fundamental principles and declared, “Glory to Ukraine! ” The U. S. did not send a representative to the meeting.

Russia has claimed it needed to send troops to Ukraine for reasons like “demilitarization” and countering NATO’s expansion. Ukraine and its allies contend that they do not pose a threat to Russia, which they accuse of attempting to seize land. Additionally, many European diplomats left a Conference on Disarmament meeting during a speech by the Russian ambassador, showing their support for Ukraine. The president of the U. N. General Assembly announced plans for a motion expressing concern about Russia’s invasion and calling for an unconditional ceasefire and lasting peace.
