From Recipient to Seller: Ukraine Opens Arms Exports to Fund Its War

Ukraine is set to start exporting its domestically produced weapons, as announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. This move aims to help the country earn money during its ongoing war with Russia. The conflict has led to growth in Ukraine’s defense industry, with over a thousand manufacturers, mainly small and privately owned, emerging since the Russian invasion in 2022. Although the industry’s expansion is rapid, the government has struggled to purchase their products, prompting Ukraine to seek financial aid from allied nations.

Zelenskiy mentioned that by 2026, ten “export centres” for Ukrainian weapons will open across Europe, with combat drones being a major export item. He emphasized that Europe’s security will increasingly rely on Ukrainian technology, particularly drones. Allies of Ukraine are keen to learn from its experiences during the war to enhance their military capabilities, especially as many have faced reduced defense budgets over the years.

Exporting Ukrainian drones is also on the agenda, with production set to begin in Germany and ongoing projects in the UK. The interest from international buyers focuses heavily on drones and electronic warfare systems. The demand includes various types of drones, particularly those designed for offensive and defensive capabilities. As drone technology has transformed warfare in Ukraine, they have become essential in strikes against enemy positions. The 2025 Ukrainian budget allocates significant funds for developing domestically produced drones, supported by financial contributions from allies.
