As Yemen Crisis Escalates, UAE Urges Immediate Restraint

The United Arab Emirates expressed deep concern about the escalating situation in Yemen, where Saudi-backed forces have taken control of areas previously held by UAE-backed southern separatists, who are seeking independence. This conflict has created significant tension between the UAE and Saudi Arabia and has disrupted their coalition against the Iran-backed Houthi movement.

The UAE urged Yemenis to show restraint and engage in dialogue to maintain security and stability. This statement followed the Southern Transitional Council (STC), which is supported by the UAE, announcing plans to hold a referendum on independence in two years after losing key territories they had captured last month.

Saudi-backed forces recently regained control of important locations in Hadramout province and were reported to have entered the region’s capital, Mukalla. Yemen’s strategic location between Saudi Arabia and the Bab al-Mandeb strait adds complexity to the situation. The STC is part of the internationally recognized government that opposes the Houthis, but the leadership has now moved to Saudi Arabia, perceiving the actions of the STC as a threat.

Additionally, the crisis has sparked serious rifts between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, revealing long-standing differences. Saudi Arabia attacked a base in Hadramout and demanded that remaining UAE forces withdraw. The STC’s announcement about a two-year transition to independence signals its strong desire to secede from Yemen.
