DOGE launched with enthusiasm, now ‘doesn’t exist’

U. S. President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been disbanded with eight months remaining in its mandate.

U. S. President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been disbanded with eight months remaining in its mandate. The initiative, launched with much enthusiasm to cut government size, has been criticized for not achieving significant savings. Scott Kupor, the Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), stated that DOGE is no longer a “centralized entity” and the office has taken over many of its functions. Some former DOGE employees are now working with the National Design Studio, led by Joe Gebbia, who aims to improve the design of government websites.

DOGE had made bold claims about cutting billions from government spending, but outside experts found it hard to verify these claims due to the lack of detailed public accounting. The project once received strong support from Trump and his team, including social media promotions from various officials and even appearances by Elon Musk, who was a prominent figure associated with DOGE. Musk famously used a chainsaw at a conference to represent his commitment to reducing bureaucracy.

While the initiative was expected to last until July 2026, signals of its decline have become clearer since summer, even after Trump’s executive order. Recent public comments from Trump and his officials now refer to DOGE in the past tense. Many key members of DOGE have moved on to new roles within the Trump administration. Gebbia is now focusing on enhancing government websites. Other former DOGE staff are taking up significant positions, like Zachary Terrell at the Department of Health and Human Services and Rachel Riley at the Office of Naval Research.

The hiring freeze that DOGE had imposed is also no longer in place, marking another sign of DOGE’s decline. During Trump’s presidency, he had initially restricted federal hiring, with specific exceptions, but this stance appears to have shifted. There now seems to be no set target for reductions in government personnel.

Despite DOGE’s dissolution, some Republican-led states are establishing similar entities at the local level. The administration continues to pursue the goal of cutting government regulations, with new efforts underway to sift through regulations and identify those for elimination, showing some continuation of DOGE’s mission even in its absence. Meanwhile, Musk has made recent appearances in Washington, including a dinner at the White House with Saudi Arabian leaders, suggesting he remains an influential figure in the administration.
