Hackers linked to an unnamed nation-state successfully breached the networks of Ribbon Communications, a major U. S. telecommunications company, remaining undetected for nearly a year. The breach, confirmed by Ribbon in a statement, was discovered when the company filed its quarterly report with the SEC on October 23, indicating that the unauthorized access began in early December 2024. The company did not disclose which nation-state was involved, or the specific customers affected, but noted that three smaller customers were impacted.
Ribbon stated that there is currently no evidence suggesting that the hackers accessed any significant information, although they identified that several customer files were accessed on two laptops outside the main network. Overall, Ribbon is cooperating with third-party experts to investigate the incident and has worked to strengthen its network to prevent future breaches.
The hack is part of a broader trend of nation-state actors targeting key technology companies in the global telecommunications sector. Previously, hackers linked to China have attacked various U. S. and international telecommunications firms and governmental networks as part of extensive cyberespionage activities. The FBI and other government agencies did not respond immediately regarding this incident due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
Ribbon Communications serves a variety of clients, including notable companies and government organizations such as the U. S. Defense Department and major telecommunications firms worldwide. According to experts, the company’s significant role in providing services to sensitive government and infrastructure entities makes it an appealing target for state-affiliated cyber attackers, particularly from China and Russia.
