Italy Deploys Warship to Protect Gaza Aid Flotilla After Drone Strike

An international aid flotilla attempting to deliver aid to Gaza reported being attacked by drones while in international waters off Greece.

An international aid flotilla attempting to deliver aid to Gaza reported being attacked by drones while in international waters off Greece. The Global Sumud Flotilla, consisting of about 50 civilian boats and including activists like Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, faced an attack from 12 drones 30 nautical miles off the Greek island of Gavdos. A spokesperson confirmed that all passengers were safe despite the drones exploding over the vessels. The flotilla reported that 11 vessels were affected and blamed Israel and its allies for the attack, stating that they would not be intimidated and would continue their journey.

Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto condemned the attack by “currently unidentified perpetrators” and announced that the Italian frigate Fasan was on its way to assist the flotilla, mainly to help any Italians on board. Israel has criticized the flotilla, accusing it of supporting Hamas. A spokesperson for Israel warned that the country would take necessary actions against the flotilla if it did not agree to drop aid at an Israeli port for further distribution.

In response to the attack, a European Commission spokeswoman stated that the use of force against the flotilla is unacceptable and acknowledged the activists’ goals to raise awareness about Gaza’s situation. The ongoing conflict in Gaza, which began after the October 7 attacks by Hamas, has resulted in significant casualties and destruction. An Italian member of the European Parliament, Benedetta Scuderi, reported that stun grenades were used in the attack, damaging her vessel. The flotilla had also experienced drone attacks earlier this month while in a Tunisian port.
