Germany’s defence minister, Boris Pistorius, dismissed premature remarks by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on plans to send European troops to Ukraine, stating she lacked the mandate to discuss the matter.

Von der Leyen stated that Europe is developing “pretty precise plans” for a multinational troop deployment to Ukraine as part of post-conflict security guarantees, with the backing of U.S. capabilities.

Pistorius emphasized that these considerations are not discussed before negotiations with various parties involved in the matter. The deployment is set to include potentially tens of thousands of European-led troops, backed by U.S. assistance, including command and control systems and intelligence and surveillance assets.
