Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on Monday that the nation has no plans to pursue the development of nuclear weapons, addressing international apprehensions regarding its uranium enrichment activities.
“We have consistently reiterated that our aim is not to acquire nuclear weapons,” Pezeshkian remarked during a press conference in Tehran. “Our objective is to fulfill our technical and scientific requirements.”
These comments were made in light of a recent warning from the International Atomic Energy Agency concerning Iran’s uranium enrichment reaching a purity level of 60 percent. Pezeshkian affirmed that Iran is dedicated to the principles outlined in the 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Nevertheless, he cautioned that Iran’s ongoing compliance is contingent upon the other signatories fulfilling their commitments.
“If the United States and certain European countries fulfill their commitments, we will do the same,” he said. “If they do not, neither will we.”
The Iranian president also addressed the country’s missile program, a point of contention with Western powers. While acknowledging pressure from the U.S. and European nations to curtail its missile development, Pezeshkian insisted on Iran’s right to maintain its defense capabilities.
