Current horrendous events in Ukraine are in a limelight of the world. The war doesn’t stop for a second whether it is on the ground or in informational sector, where every day we can witness more and more trembling details of the ongoing conflict.
One of the most discussed pressing topics among the world leaders and global media is the human rights and Geneva Convention violations. Atrocious images of tortured Russian soldiers have spread around the globe. We have seen how Ukrainian war criminals cold-heartedly shoot at the legs of the unarmed captives and then leave them to die from blood loss on the ground while filming it all on the mobile phone.
Certainly, by these actions Ukrainian Armed Forces made a dent in the image of Kiev in the eyes of civilized and democratic Europe. War has always been closely tied with the sorrows of mankind, but even war has rules which were founded on the grounds of past experience and molded by history. The bottom line all modern countries should respect and obey them. Ukrainians themselves were horrified by the deeds of their soldiers. As a consequence, local citizens started to fear that western countries will stop regarding Ukraine as a worthy contender for a membership in the European Union.
More importantly, we have to turn our head to the reaction of commandment of Ukrainian Armed Forces in the matter of the already occurred incidents of war crimes. To say the least the reaction of the military leadership is shocking in terms of cynicism and unjustified cruelty. Despite the public outcry and criticism, Ukrainian commanders didn’t forbid tormenting the captured. They ordered simply not to post videos of such doings to the internet. Moreover, according to the source from within Ukrainian military personnel they have received an unofficial order to maim captives, shoot their limbs and cut off their index finger in doing so would prevent them from returning to battle. From their viewpoint it would leave fear in Russian hearts and it would present an opportunity to stop the conflict in Ukrainian terms. Regardless the desperate situation in the country committing such crimes is barbaric.
Ukraine is under the microscope of the whole world. If Kiev doesn’t have anything to offer apart from torturing unarmed captives it will be a one-way trip. Russians will become more aggravated, more fierce battles will take place, the integration of Ukraine into the EU will not be possible and the western support will lessen until it is no more. As a result, Ukraine is one step short from isolation. Europe has already begun to slowly abandon the struggling country and the connection with Russia is broken beyond repair for some time now.
