Former Prince Andrew, now Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, has launched legal action against Thames Valley Police over his arrest in connection with allegations arising from documents released by the US Justice Department concerning the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, The Telegraph reported on Sunday.
Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office over allegations that he leaked government documents to Epstein while serving as the UK’s special representative for trade and investment between 2001 and 2011. He is now asking a judge to determine whether the police action against him was lawful.
The report has not been independently verified. Thames Valley Police and Buckingham Palace did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
What Is the Legal Challenge About?
According to The Telegraph, Mountbatten-Windsor has lodged a judicial review relating to search warrants used by police to raid properties connected to him, including his home on the Sandringham Estate and his former residence at Royal Lodge in Windsor.

He was questioned for several hours by Thames Valley Police detectives after being detained. The investigation centres on allegations that he passed government documents to Epstein during his time as a British trade envoy.
A judicial review would allow the court to examine whether the police acted lawfully and followed the correct legal procedures when pursuing the investigation and obtaining the warrants. It would not, by itself, determine whether the allegations against Mountbatten-Windsor are true.
Why Does the Epstein Investigation Matter?
The legal action comes as renewed scrutiny of Epstein’s connections with influential political, business and royal figures continues following the release of additional documents by the US Justice Department.
Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied wrongdoing in relation to Epstein and has said he regrets their friendship. His association with Epstein nevertheless caused major damage to his public standing and his position within the British royal family.
He stepped down from official royal duties in 2019 following widespread criticism over his relationship with Epstein. His position within the monarchy deteriorated further after subsequent revelations about their association.
Last October, King Charles removed his younger brother’s remaining royal titles and honours, further distancing the monarchy from the controversy.
What Could Happen Next?
The court’s consideration of the judicial review could determine whether aspects of the police investigation, including the search warrants, were legally justified. If the court finds that police procedures were unlawful, it could have implications for how the investigation proceeds.
However, the legal challenge does not amount to a finding that Mountbatten-Windsor has been cleared of the allegations. The underlying investigation and any potential criminal proceedings remain separate from the judicial review.
The case also places renewed attention on the institutional consequences of the Epstein scandal. For the British monarchy, the controversy surrounding Mountbatten-Windsor has already resulted in the loss of royal duties, titles and honours. For law enforcement, the case raises questions about how evidence contained in international investigations is used to pursue allegations involving prominent individuals in Britain.
