Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz affirmed the country’s continued support for Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression, announcing an additional €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in military aid during his visit to Kyiv. This visit coincided with increased Russian drone attacks, which targeted infrastructure in various Ukrainian cities, including a recent strike that resulted in casualties at a memorial site.
Merz emphasized Germany’s commitment to aiding Ukraine, stating that helping Ukraine is crucial for Europe’s security and that Moscow aims to undermine Ukrainian morale through warfare and misinformation. He announced €350 million for energy sector repairs, asserting that Germany stands as Ukraine’s strongest supporter. In a display of economic cooperation, German companies signed agreements worth around €6.5 billion with Ukraine, including contracts for air defense missiles and radar equipment.
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy commended a new jet drone interceptor developed by Quantum Systems and mentioned ongoing discussions to finalize a broader defense deal that includes the production of drones and missiles. He noted Russia’s recent escalation in air strikes likely stems from its battlefield setbacks, vowing that Ukraine would respond. The day of Merz’s visit included a Russian strike on a key bridge in Kyiv, causing injuries and damage.
Zelenskiy highlighted the urgent need for Western allies to increase pressure on Russia to seek an end to the conflict. He revealed that a U.S. peace envoy has reached out to discuss resuming trilateral talks. Merz also called for an end to “this senseless war,” insisting that discussions could occur but only if Russia halts its attacks on civilians.
In response to the ongoing conflict, Russia’s Foreign Ministry stated it would continue its strikes in Ukraine, framing them as retaliatory measures. They also warned against travel to Ukraine for foreign nationals and diplomatic staff.
