Haakon Becomes Norway’s New Monarch
Crown Prince Haakon became Norway’s king on Friday following the death of his father, King Harald. The 53 year old monarch is now Norway’s fourth king since the country gained full independence from Sweden in 1905.
Education and Early Life
Born Haakon Magnus on July 20, 1973, Haakon attended a state primary school, reflecting Norway’s relatively egalitarian culture, before attending a private secondary school.
He later joined the navy and studied political science at the University of California, Berkeley, followed by development studies at the London School of Economics.
Outside his royal duties, Haakon developed a passion for music and surfing. He has even said that he would have pursued professional surfing if he had not been born into the royal family.

Marriage and Family Controversies
Haakon married Mette Marit Tjessem Hoeiby, a commoner and single mother, in 2001 after meeting her at a music festival in 1999.
Their relationship initially generated controversy, particularly because Mette Marit had a son from a previous relationship. More recently, the family has faced renewed scrutiny following revelations involving Mette Marit’s correspondence with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Her son, Marius Borg Hoeiby, was also convicted on rape and domestic violence charges and sentenced to four years in prison. Both Hoeiby and prosecutors have appealed the sentence.
Haakon has publicly supported his wife while maintaining that his stepson should face the legal process like any other citizen.
