President Donald Trump viewed his upgraded Boeing 747, a jet gifted by Qatar, at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. He called it the world’s most luxurious plane, highlighting its unique construction. The aircraft has been refurbished by L3Harris Technologies and features a new color scheme of red, white, dark blue, and gold, chosen by Trump, moving away from the traditional design used for decades.
Trump emphasized that the upgrade was needed to match the more modern aircraft operated by other countries, noting the respect these nations have for the U. S. He announced that this new design would also be applied to the rest of the Air Force One fleet. The upgraded plane will provide a more modern and luxurious travel option for the president, aides, security, and media. However, the cost of the upgrade has not been made public, and there are concerns about security due to the fast-tracked nature of the refurbishment. Despite this, Air Force officials reassured the public of the plane’s compliance with presidential standards.
Trump stated that the upgraded aircraft would lead a historic flyover during a July 4 ceremony in Washington, D. C. He noted that the military-grade Boeing 747-200 it replaced has served for over 30 years and would eventually be displayed in a museum. Questions arose regarding the appropriateness of accepting such a luxurious gift, but Trump dismissed the criticisms.
The conversion of the Qatar jet included necessary security upgrades and communication improvements. Democratic senators estimated the costs for conversions could exceed $1 billion and raised concerns about potential security issues. The Qatari plane is a temporary solution while awaiting delivery of two new Boeing 747-8s, which have been delayed until 2028 due to rising costs. The new color scheme will also be adopted for the new planes and other government aircraft.
