The United States and Iran are set to hold important talks in Oman, as tensions in the region rise with President Donald Trump’s threat of military action. The U. S. wants to discuss various issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, its ballistic missiles, support for militant groups, and human rights concerns. Iran, however, insists on only discussing its nuclear program.
The nuclear program has been a source of conflict since 2003, when it was reported that Iran violated the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) by conducting secret nuclear activities. The NPT allows Iran to have a civilian nuclear program but prohibits the use of technology for weapons development. Western nations tried to limit Iran’s nuclear efforts through sanctions and diplomacy, fearing it might be pursuing a bomb, which Iran denies. A significant agreement was made in 2015, limiting Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanction relief, but Trump abandoned this deal, claiming it was flawed. Under President Biden, talks resumed but failed to produce results, and Iran escalated uranium enrichment. In response to escalating tensions, including missile strikes from Iran, the U. S. engaged in military action against Iranian nuclear sites.
Iran possesses a large stockpile of ballistic missiles and has engaged in military responses, including firing missiles at Israel. This has raised alarms, with Israeli officials comparing the risks from Iran’s missile program to its nuclear ambitions. Iran maintains it will not negotiate on its missile capabilities.
Furthermore, Iran exerts influence through support for armed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, which have become significant challenges to Israel. Despite setbacks, these groups remain armed and defiant. The U. S. aims to limit the influence of Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and has threatened sanctions on Iraqi officials if these groups are included in the government.
Lastly, Trump’s statements coincide with escalating protests in Iran over economic issues and calls to end clerical rule, resulting in significant unrest and a harsh crackdown by the Iranian government. Trump has warned Iran against violence against protesters.
