The Philippines and China traded accusations over a maritime clash near disputed islands in the South China Sea.

The Philippine Maritime Council accused Chinese maritime forces of using water cannon and colliding with a Filipino vessel near Thitu Island, condemning the incident and promising diplomatic action.

Manila’s coast guard reported that three Filipino vessels were anchored to protect local fishermen when Chinese ships approached and used water cannon for intimidation. A Chinese coast guard ship also allegedly rammed a Philippine vessel, causing minor damage but no injuries.

In response, China claimed the Philippine vessels illegally entered waters near Sandy Cay, blaming Manila for the confrontation. Manila stated it would continue operations to protect Filipino fishermen. U. S. Ambassador MaryKay Carlson criticized China’s actions as aggressive.

The South China Sea, part of the Spratly Islands, has seen repeated tensions, particularly regarding the Scarborough Shoal, with multiple nations asserting claims in the area that is crucial for global trade.
