Romania’s defense ministry has requested parliamentary approval to acquire hundreds of Abrams tanks, along with ammunition, parts, and training, totaling over $7 billion.

In 2023, Romania signed a contract to buy 54 Abrams tanks from U. S. Army stock for $1.07 billion, with delivery expected by 2028. The country plans to spend $458.2 million on additional ammunition and training and aims to order 216 more tanks for €6.49 billion ($7.6 billion).

Details on delivery dates were not provided. Romania shares a long border with Ukraine and hosts a U. S. missile defense system.

Following breaches of its airspace by drones, Romania supports the creation of a “drone wall” for defense and plans to collaborate with Ukraine on drone production.
