Cyprus is pursuing potential cooperation with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for an EU-financed subsea power cable that will connect Europe to the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides met with the UAE president to explore partnership and investment opportunities related to this project, reaffirming Cyprus’s political commitment. This initiative aims to link Greece, Cyprus, and Israel via what is planned to be the world’s longest and deepest high-voltage subsea cable, measuring 1,240 km and reaching 3,000 meters.
Despite project promoters supporting the link, European prosecutors recently initiated an investigation into potential criminal offenses concerning the €1.9 billion ($2.2 billion) project, which has faced a series of delays.
The Greek transmission operator IPTO took over the project in late 2023, succeeding a decade-long effort by a Cyprus-based operator. Cyprus has previously requested clarification on the project’s total cost, viability, and potential liabilities arising from unforeseen delays.
