The EU has requested an international inquiry into the attack on the Golan Heights and advised all involved parties to exercise caution and prevent further escalation, as stated by EU foreign policy leader Josep Borrell.
“Shocking images from the soccer field in the Druze town of Majdal Shams. I strongly condemn this bloodbath. We need an independent international investigation into this unacceptable incident. We urge all parties to exercise utmost restraint and avoid further escalation,” he wrote on his X profile.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) previously reported that the northern region of the country, which includes the Israel-controlled Golan Heights, was subjected to intense shelling from Lebanon. A soccer field in the Druze community of Majdal Shams was hit by at least one rocket. As per the most recent updates, 12 individuals, comprising children and teenagers, lost their lives while 19 others sustained injuries.
The IDF said that the rocket had been fired by the Hezbollah armed groups from Chebaa, a village in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah denied any involvement in the incident.
Majdal Shams sits near the separation line between Israel and Syria and has been under Israeli control since the 1967 Six-Day War.
