Diplomatic Push Falls Short: Iran-US Deal Still Out of Reach

Iran and the United States are still not close to an agreement to end their conflict, as a senior Iranian official stated.

Iran and the United States are still not close to an agreement to end their conflict, as a senior Iranian official stated. Qatar is actively mediating to resolve differences and prevent further escalation after the recent US midterm elections. The US recently conducted limited “defensive” strikes on Iran’s Qeshm island, targeting missiles aimed at US assets, but these actions do not indicate a return to major fighting.

President Trump has reaffirmed his willingness to take military action, saying he does not want to cause casualties but will act if necessary. Qatar has intensified its mediation efforts, fearing renewed conflict after the elections. The Iranian official emphasized that Tehran’s conditions must be met for any reopening of the critical Hormuz waterway.

Both Iran and the US are reviewing proposals presented by Qatar’s mediators, who had returned to Doha after discussions in Tehran. Qatar’s foreign ministry expressed hope that a deal could still be achieved to facilitate further negotiations. An official involved in the talks expects to hear back from both Washington and Tehran within the next day and a half.

The Iranian official, speaking anonymously, made it clear that Iran would not agree to what it considers excessive US demands and stated that nuclear discussions would only begin after these conditions are satisfied. Iran would respond forcefully to any US attacks, both regionally and beyond.

Oil prices rose after a significant drop earlier, partly due to optimism about diplomatic progress. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards reported shooting down US drones near the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Parliament Speaker Qalibaf stated that the US must take action following Iran’s strong response and noted that threats from the US would not lead to Iran’s submission.

While there are concerns that Trump may resume military actions post-elections, he suggested that he believes Iran wants a deal soon. Meanwhile, Iran’s military is preparing to respond immediately to threats, with potential targets beyond the region mentioned.

Further diplomatic efforts are ongoing with regional powers to avoid escalation, as the conflict has broadened with Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia. Iranian officials are also engaged in talks with Saudi Arabia for regional security without foreign military interference, as tensions with the Houthis continue to rise, disrupting trade and prompting military responses.
