Germany announced it will keep sanctions against Russia due to its war on Ukraine, even after US President Donald Trump lifted US sanctions on Russian fuel. Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius stated that Germany’s commitment to sanctions against Russia is steadfast, and the country is cooperating with European partners for further sanctions. He added that Germany’s support for Ukraine remains unchanged and that diplomatic efforts will continue.
Trump highlighted that Russia agreed to supply diesel to global markets to reduce fuel prices, leading to the temporary lifting of US sanctions. With diesel prices reaching near-record levels, concerns are raised for Trump’s Republican Party before the upcoming elections. Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that Germany would maintain its support for Ukraine.
