Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s rejection of Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end hostilities, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that any move to reopen the strait would depend on certain conditions being met. Araqchi also reiterated that a negotiated solution is necessary to resolve the current deadlock.
Iran previously presented a peace proposal to the U.S. through Qatari mediators at the UN General Assembly, but Trump claimed the Iranians are desperate for a deal due to their struggles. However, Araqchi noted that the mediators had not officially confirmed Trump’s rejection, and Iran is waiting for definitive communication from them before making further decisions.
The U.S. has imposed an economic blockade on Iran to counter maritime attacks that have reduced shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. While Trump has ruled out the Iranian proposal, he reportedly remains skeptical of Iran’s willingness to comply with U.S. demands and considers a renewed military campaign possible after the upcoming midterm elections. In contrast, a U.S. official described previous discussions via mediators as positive.
The ongoing conflict has harmed oil supply and impacted the global economy. Araqchi indicated that if the U.S. is serious about a deal, discussions could broaden to include nuclear program topics. Trump has declared that Iran should never have a nuclear weapon, while Iran insists that it will not compromise on its rights, including uranium enrichment.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian affirmed readiness for talks on various issues, while rejecting any form of coercion. He stated that Iran does not seek war but will defend itself against threats. Previous diplomatic efforts have failed, and the conflict has led to significant loss of life, further straining Iran’s economy and escalating regional retaliatory actions.
