India-US Trade Deal Nears as Tariff Talks Focus on Section 301 Relief

India is set to talk with U. S. trade officials about the Section 301 investigation and possible tariff measures as the two countries work towards a trade deal. A U. S. delegation led by negotiator Brendan Lynch will meet with Indian trade officials for three days starting Tuesday in New Delhi.

Earlier this year, India and the U. S. reached an initial understanding for a trade deal, but discussions slowed down after the U. S. Supreme Court overruled President Trump’s tariff measures. Following this decision, the Trump administration began investigating unfair trade practices against various partners, including India, while imposing a 10% tariff.

During the upcoming talks, India will push for relief from these tariffs and aims to negotiate a fair, equitable, and balanced agreement. India wants tariff treatment that would give it an edge over other manufacturing hubs in Asia and seeks preferential rates compared to developing countries in South and Southeast Asia, such as Bangladesh and Pakistan. The discussions could lead to a visit from U. S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer once the terms are closer to being finalized, as India looks for better access to the U. S. market amid ongoing trade tensions.
