Trump Urges Iran to ‘Get Smart’ on Deal Amid Plans to Prolong Blockade

U. S. President Donald Trump urged Iran on Wednesday to “get smart soon” and finalize a deal as the conflict continues without resolution. He expressed frustration on Truth Social, claiming Iran was unable to organize itself and indicating that it could reach out for negotiations if desired. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has directed his aides to prepare for an extended blockade of Iran’s ports to pressure Tehran, as other strategies, such as bombing or disengagement, were seen as riskier.

Trump criticized Iran’s inability to sign a non-nuclear deal and urged them to act quickly. Iran is seeking some recognition of its right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes, while holding a stockpile of about 440 kilograms (970 pounds) of 60% enriched uranium, which could be further enriched for nuclear weapons. Iranian officials believe they can manage the blockade by using alternative trade routes and do not see the conflict as concluded.

The war has caused significant casualties, impacted energy markets, and disrupted global trade. Iran’s economy is suffering, highlighted by its currency dropping to a historic low value of 1,810,000 rials per dollar, with a nearly 15% decline in just two days. Inflation reached 65.8% for the period from March 20 to April 20, and this trend is expected to worsen with the currency’s rapid decline.

Iran’s latest proposal to end the ongoing war, initiated on February 28 and punctuated by a ceasefire since April 8, suggested postponing discussions on its nuclear program until after the conflict is formally resolved. However, this did not align with Trump’s requirements to address the nuclear issue immediately.

U. S. intelligence agencies are assessing how Iran might react if Trump were to announce a unilateral victory in the ongoing war. Since the war’s onset, Iran has blocked most shipping in the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, and the U. S. began its blockade of Iranian vessels earlier this month.

Trump’s social media post featured a provocative image, reinforcing his tough stance. Additionally, recent shifts in Iran’s leadership dynamics have empowered hardline commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps following the deaths of several top officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Pressure is mounting on Trump domestically to resolve the war as his approval rating hit a low of 34%. Oil prices have surged nearly 3%, raising concerns over prolonged supply disruptions from an extended blockade. In response to rising fuel costs, the European Union has implemented measures to help member states manage agricultural and transport expenses but has not yet reduced usage.
