China is set to enhance its strategic diplomacy while hosting the annual Xiangshan Forum amid increasing regional tensions. The forum aims to promote President Xi Jinping’s vision for a new international order, which opposes “hegemonism and power politics,” particularly targeting the United States. Around 1,800 attendees from 100 countries, including diplomats, military officials, and scholars, will participate in this three-day event.
Many foreign representatives, especially from Western nations, seek insights into China’s military modernization and the inner workings of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). They are expected to gather technical information about China’s weapon systems from their PLA counterparts. Recently, China showcased new weapons, including hypersonic missiles and advanced drones, at a military parade, but analysts question their operational status and effectiveness in conflicts.
Amid rising tensions in East Asia, especially seen through recent PLA navy trials and joint U. S.-Japan military exercises, understanding the PLA’s command structure is of great importance. Numerous generals close to Xi have been removed from the PLA, raising questions about its leadership.
While most Western militaries will send lower-level delegations, keeping the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore as the main security conference, the U. S. will only send its defense attache from Beijing’s embassy this year. Other confirmed delegations are from countries like Russia, France, and Brazil.
