Spain is intensifying its pressure on Israel by prohibiting Israel-bound ships and aircraft carrying weapons from utilizing Spanish ports and airspace.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Monday that Spain will also increase its aid to the Palestinian Authority and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
Additionally, an embargo will be placed on goods manufactured in Israeli settlements located in the occupied Palestinian territories. Sanchez expressed hope that these measures would encourage Prime Minister Netanyahu and his government to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian population. Spain will also implement a ban on entry for individuals who have participated in what Sanchez described as “genocide.”
In response, Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar alleged that Sanchez was attempting to distract from domestic corruption scandals and labeled the Spanish measures as “antisemitic.” Consequently, Israel retaliated by banning Spanish Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz and Youth Minister Sira Rego from entering the country.
