A Tunnel of Diplomacy? Kremlin’s Audacious Bid to Physically Link US and Russia

Russia and the United States are proposed to build a “Putin-Trump” rail tunnel under the Bering Strait to connect their countries, as suggested by Kirill Dmitriev, President Putin’s investment envoy. This project would cost $8 billion and aims to create a 70-mile rail and cargo link in under eight years, funded by Moscow and international partners. Dmitriev introduced the idea following a phone call between Putin and U. S. President Donald Trump, where they discussed seeking a solution for the war in Ukraine.

Dmitriev noted that the idea of linking the U. S. and Russia has existed for over a century, including earlier plans for a Siberia-Alaska railway. The Bering Strait, the narrow waterway separating Chukotka in Russia from Alaska, is about 51 miles wide. He mentioned that The Boring Company, led by Elon Musk, could help with construction, suggesting their technology could reduce costs significantly.

Furthermore, Dmitriev referenced a “Kennedy-Khrushchev World Peace Bridge” concept from the Cold War and shared sketches of that proposed route. He emphasized that it is time to connect the continents and highlighted RDIF’s previous success with the Russia-China railroad bridge. Dmitriev’s vision is to symbolize unity and collaboration through this ambitious project. There has been no immediate response from Musk or Trump.
