Israeli official: Hamas leaders will face another strike if they survived Qatar attack

The Israeli ambassador to the U. S., Yechiel Leiter, stated that if Israel did not succeed in killing Hamas leaders in an air strike in Qatar, they would try again.

The Israeli ambassador to the U. S., Yechiel Leiter, stated that if Israel did not succeed in killing Hamas leaders in an air strike in Qatar, they would try again. He expressed confidence in Israel’s actions despite criticism, claiming such moves are making Israel better.

This airstrike, targeting Hamas leaders, raised concerns about jeopardizing ceasefire efforts in Gaza, especially since Qatar has been mediating those negotiations. The attack followed a shooting near Jerusalem that killed six people, for which Hamas took responsibility. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced global condemnation for extending military operations in the region since Hamas attacked Israel in 2023.

On the following day, Israel struck the Yemeni capital, targeting Houthi military sites after previously attacking a senior Houthi leader. The Houthis have been attacking vessels in the Red Sea, claiming to support the Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Leader’s son killed in strike

Hamas reported that five of its members were killed in a recent attack in Doha, including a son of a key leader, but stated that its top leaders survived. This incident prompted increased diplomatic activity among Arab states, with the UAE President and Jordan’s Crown Prince visiting Qatar to show solidarity, while Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince is expected to arrive soon.

Meanwhile, the European Commission plans to propose sanctions on extremist Israeli ministers and suspend certain trade measures with Israel, reflecting the EU’s growing criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Germany, traditionally a strong supporter of Israel, acknowledged these proposals and expressed willingness to discuss future measures. The airstrike in Doha followed Israeli warnings for Palestinians to evacuate Gaza City, raising concerns about the potential for a ceasefire.

Impact on ceasefire talks unclear, US says

U. S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee stated that the impact of the strike on ceasefire negotiations is unclear, as Hamas has rejected all offers. Hamas claims it will release all hostages if Israel ends the war and withdraws from Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu seeks a complete deal for the simultaneous release of hostages and Hamas’s surrender. The October 7 attack by Hamas resulted in 1,200 deaths, mostly civilians, while Israel’s military response has led to over 64,000 deaths in Gaza.
