Denmark: Take Trump’s Greenland Ambitions Seriously

Denmark's Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, stated that U. S. President Donald Trump's interest in acquiring Greenland must be taken seriously, although she emphasized that Greenland does not want to join the United States.

Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, stated that U. S. President Donald Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland must be taken seriously, although she emphasized that Greenland does not want to join the United States. Concerns in Denmark resurfaced after a U. S. military operation in Venezuela, highlighting fears about Greenland’s future as an autonomous territory of Denmark. Trump has repeatedly expressed the need for Greenland for defense purposes and mentioned revisiting the discussion in a few weeks.

Frederiksen made it clear that both the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland oppose any annexation, with Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen commenting on social media, “Enough is enough. . . No more fantasies about annexation. ” Greenland, which is strategically located between Europe and North America, is covered by Denmark’s NATO membership, but it is not an independent NATO member.

Support for Greenland’s self-determination came from European allies, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirming that Greenland’s future must be decided by its people. German officials suggested NATO could discuss enhancing Greenland’s protection, while France and the European Commission also reinforced the importance of national sovereignty for Greenland.
