Vice President Kamala Harris officially accepted the nomination of the Democratic Party as the presidential candidate during the Democratic National Convention. In the United Center in Chicago, Illinois earlier, Harris affirmed her choice as her vice president, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz accepted his nomination as the party’s vice president. Harris is the first woman of color, the woman of many firsts, the first Black woman and first South Asian person to be the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party, a major political group in the United States coming from the Western side.
Vice President Harris, before she entered national politics, was a former attorney general. Eventually, she was elected as a Senator for California. Moreover, she is the current vice president under President Joe Biden. Her candidacy was an extraordinary milestone of convergence, from grass-roots involvement to party mates and allies. She asserted, “I know there are people of various political views watching tonight, and I want you to know: I promise to be a president for all Americans. You can always trust me to put country above party and self. To hold sacred America’s fundamental principles. From the rule of law. To free and fair elections.”
US President Joe Biden earlier became the presumptive Democratic nominee. After his debate performance and decision to withdraw his candidacy, Biden endorsed Vice President Harris. In less than twenty-four hours, Harris secured enough support to make her the new presumptive nominee.
Harris delivered her keynote address as she accepted her party’s historic nomination at the Democratic National Convention (DNC). Harris made a statement that her mother, Shyamala Harris, entered American soil at the age of 19 and traveled from India to California with a dream to become a scientist who can cure breast cancer. “When she finished school, she was supposed to return home to a traditional arranged marriage. But, as fate would have it, she met my father, Donald Harris, a student from Jamaica; they fell in love and got married.”
Through the years, the act of self-determination made Harris and her sister Maya determined to always take the unknown journey from one state to the next, wherever her parents’ job would lead them. Although her Jamaican father taught her to be fearless, her parents separated when she was in elementary school.
“I know there are people of various political views watching tonight, and I want you to know: I promise to be president for all Americans. You can always trust me to put country above party and self. To hold sacred America’s fundamental principles. From the rule of law. To free and fair elections.”
Harris, if elected as president, wanted to bring together for the American economy. “I will bring together labor and workers, small business owners and entrepreneurs, and American companies to create jobs, grow our economy, and lower the cost of everyday needs like health care, housing, and groceries.” Harris wanted to end the housing shortage and protect Social Security and Medicare. She also mentioned the importance of passing a middle-class tax cut that will benefit more than 100 million Americans; along with the reproductive freedom to which she will proudly sign as President of the United States of America.
“In this election, many other fundamental freedoms are at stake. The freedom to live safe from gun violence—in our schools, communities, and places of worship; and the freedom to love who you love openly and with pride. The freedom to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live free from the pollution that fuels the climate crisis. And the freedom that unlocks all the others: the freedom to vote.”
“As President, I will bring back the bipartisan border security bill…….. And I will sign it into law.”
Harris, if elected, promised to fix the immigration system. “We can create an earned pathway to citizenship and secure our border. America, we must also be steadfast in advancing our security and our values abroad,” she said. She will show her sacred obligation to care for the troops and their families. When it comes to artificial intelligence and the future of space, Harris asserted that America will show global leadership. She further elaborated that she would stand with Ukraine against Russia. “I helped mobilize a global response—over 50 countries—to defend against Putin’s aggression. And as President, I will stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies.”
Harris will be supporting Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas. “…Security. Freedom. And self-determination. And know this: I will never hesitate to take whatever action is necessary to defend our forces and our interests against Iran and Iran-backed terrorists. And I will not cozy up to tyrants and dictators like Kim Jong-un, who are rooting for Trump. Because they know he is easy to manipulate with flattery and favors,” she said.
“As President, I will never waver in defense of America’s security and ideals. Because, in the enduring struggle between democracy and tyranny, I know where I stand—and where the United States of America belongs. Fellow Americans, I love our country with all my heart. Everywhere I go, in everyone I meet, I see a nation ready to move forward, ready for the next step, in the incredible journey that is America.”
“So, let’s get out there and let’s fight for it. Let’s get out there and vote for it. And together, let us write the next great chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told. Thank you. God bless you. May God bless the United States of America.”
In the Democratic National Convention, the four days showcased various themes that sum up the Harris Presidency. Day 1 was “For the People,” Day 2 was “A Bold Vision for America’s Future,” Day 3 was “A Fight for Our Freedoms,” and Day 4 was “For Our Future.” For many Americans and viewers across the world, the Democratic National Convention was historical and even extraordinary in times of many hopes and firsts. If indeed Kamala Harris wins, she will certainly have a powerful impact, where global policies may shift to a paradigm closer to peace above all. America’s freedom is a worldwide freedom experience. The final night of the Democratic National Convention ended with around 100,000 balloons tied to the rafters in the United Center that were released at the end of Vice President Kamala Harris remarks. The night was filled with hope as many shouted “When We Fight, We Win,” a slogan adopted by Harris.
