Merz: No Quick End in Sight for Iran War

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed rising concerns in Europe about the U. S. and Israeli war against Iran, warning of a "dangerous escalation" without a clear plan to end it.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed rising concerns in Europe about the U. S. and Israeli war against Iran, warning of a “dangerous escalation” without a clear plan to end it. His comments followed U. S. President Donald Trump’s indication that the war could end soon, but could also escalate if Iran interfered with tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

Merz noted that while Germany shares many goals of the U. S. and Israeli operations, such as the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamanei, there are growing doubts about the conflict’s management. He emphasized that Germany does not want a prolonged war or the destruction of Iran’s integrity, statehood, or economy.

Merz highlighted the importance of having a stable Iran for regional peace and security, ensuring no threats to Israel or other allies. He raised concerns over the economic impact of a long-term closure of the Strait of Hormuz, where a significant portion of the world’s oil is transported. He warned that chaos similar to that in Libya or Iraq could endanger security, energy supplies, and migration issues for Europe.
