The militant group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin began the blockade in early September, attacking fuel convoys and causing significant shortages.
The Malian government suspended classes for two weeks due to the crisis. The U. S. embassy highlighted ongoing security issues, including armed conflict and disruptions to essential services. Americans were advised against traveling over land because of potential terrorist attacks. Those choosing to stay should have plans for sheltering in place.
Additionally, the State Department authorized the departure of non-emergency personnel and their families, and the travel advisory for Mali is at level 4, indicating “do not travel. “
