Ukraine suspended a cabinet minister, German Galushchenko, pending an investigation into a $100 million kickback scheme related to energy procurement. This decision reflects growing public discontent over corruption during wartime. Anti-corruption authorities have arrested five suspects and located two others involved in allegedly controlling procurement at the nuclear agency Energoatom and various state enterprises. Galushchenko, who previously served as energy minister, has not been named among the suspects but supports his suspension as a suitable response. He stated his intention to defend himself.
Recorded conversations involving Galushchenko and some suspects were released by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), which is investigating the case. The ongoing probe into corruption among Ukraine’s leaders is critical for the country’s goal of joining the European Union and distancing itself from Russian influence, especially as Ukrainians face energy shortages due to Russian attacks.
Earlier this year, President Zelenskiy attempted to limit the powers of NABU amid allegations of protecting associates but reversed his decision after public protests. One suspect, Timur Mindich, connected to Zelenskiy’s rise as a comedian, has not commented, but his company distanced itself from the allegations.
