Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, announced that within the next 10 to 20 years, large data centres will be built in space, which he believes will outperform those on Earth due to constant solar energy.
The demand for such enormous centres is increasing because of the rising use of artificial intelligence and cloud computing, which require substantial electricity and cooling resources.
During a discussion at Italian Tech Week, Bezos highlighted that these space-based centres would benefit from uninterrupted solar power, avoiding weather-related disruptions. He noted that the movement towards using space for these purposes follows successes with weather and communication satellites, suggesting that the next step will be data centres and manufacturing in space.
However, he acknowledged that there will be challenges, such as maintenance difficulties, upgrade limitations, high launching costs, and the risks associated with rocket launches.
