Empowering Lives and Advancing SDG 4: My Journey on International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day, observed globally on September 8 each year, stands as a testament to the transformative power of literacy and the intrinsic right to education. Recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), this day serves as an annual reminder of how literacy shapes individuals and societies. This year, International Literacy Day is celebrated under the theme, “Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies.” This theme offers an opportunity to reflect on the crucial role of literacy in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) on education and lifelong learning, as well as its significance in building inclusive, peaceful, just, and sustainable societies. In this context, I embark on a journey—a personal narrative that weaves together my own life transformation with the profound significance of education and literacy.

This transformative journey began just a month ago with my induction into a new company. This moment marked a remarkable transition in my life, igniting a passion to further develop and enrich my professional self. My focus is particularly directed towards refining my organisational skills, a pursuit uniquely influenced by my background in Sustainability Management.

Education, a cornerstone of personal and societal development, has consistently been the driving force in my life. It has armed me with the tools and opportunities required to navigate the complexities of the modern world, shaping my path towards a brighter future.

My journey, much like countless others, has been filled with trials and triumphs, each an integral part of a transformative process that reshaped my perspective and allowed me to grow in ways I could never have imagined. It is a journey I am proud to share—a testament to the boundless possibilities that education offers, especially in the context of sustainability and the SDGs.

Sustainability Management has been a defining aspect of my educational and professional journey. This field equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to address complex global challenges, aligning perfectly with the Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the United Nations. My commitment to sustainability is woven into my story, influencing my choices and aspirations.

Education’s significance is undeniable; it is a cornerstone of human development, a vital catalyst for individual growth, and a driving force behind societal progress. It is a journey that often spans over a decade—typically at least 14 years of schooling for secondary education and around 18 years to earn a first-degree qualification. The investment of time and effort is substantial, but the rewards are immeasurable. With a robust educational foundation, we unlock our full potential, empowering us to make a profound and positive impact on the world around us.

After completing my undergraduate degree, I dedicated myself to the academic realm, specifically working with students from low-income backgrounds. This experience ignited my passion and dedication, making each day at my first job deeply rewarding. My role in nurturing the growth and aspirations of young, talented individuals became an integral part of my own journey.

With unwavering determination, I embarked on a path to pursue a master’s degree in business with a specialisation in Sustainability Management while maintaining employment. My goal was clear: secure admission to my dream university within a year. Tirelessly, I worked towards this objective, and eventually, my efforts paid off as I gained admission to my desired institution. While leaving my workplace after a year of service was a challenging decision, it was made with confidence in my abilities and excitement for the opportunities ahead.

After completing my MBA in Sustainability Management, my aspirations shifted towards corporate challenges with a strong sustainability focus. Armed with newfound knowledge and skills acquired during my Master’s programme, I set my sights on joining a prominent corporation that not only aligns with my professional goals but also shares my commitment to sustainability and the SDGs. I pursued my desired position at my preferred company and proudly stand where I am today—a testament to the transformative power of education in action, particularly in the context of sustainability and SDG 4.

Gratitude fills my heart for the realisation of my dreams, even in the face of adversity. My journey may not be flawless, but one consistent priority has been education, regardless of the challenges encountered along the way.

As we celebrate International Literacy Day, my narrative serves as a testament to the transformative potential of education, especially within the framework of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals. It illustrates how education, beyond opening doors to opportunities, empowers individuals to pursue their passions, ultimately contributing to the betterment of society and the achievement of the SDGs.

My story is one of many, underscoring the vital importance of investing in education and ensuring universal access to learning. In a world where literacy and education remain elusive for far too many, let us recommit ourselves on this International Literacy Day to the promotion of literacy and lifelong learning, with a specific focus on sustainability and SDG 4. Education extends beyond personal achievement; it is the path to a brighter, more equitable, sustainable, and peaceful future for all. As we reflect on the significance of this day, let us rally behind initiatives that make quality education accessible to everyone, allowing more individuals to embark on their transformative journeys through learning and, in doing so, contributing to the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals for a more sustainable and equitable world.
