Sustainable Development Goals 2030: Pakistan at a glance

“A central promise agenda of 2030 is to “leave no one behind”. This promise can only be fulfilled through the broadest cooperation between the international community, Governments and Civil society.”  With these lines Secretary General of UN Ban Ki-Moon emphasized the role of civil society, national governments, and international community in implementing the 2030 objectives of peaceful and prosperous World. In 2015 when the time frame of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) comes to an end with so many shortcomings and developments for international communities. Furthermore, targets were set for the agenda of 2030 and agenda of these goals will address in futuristic Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).These SDGs contains seventeen goals with certain targets and inclusion of indicators to measure the progress of a state. Moreover, objective of these goals needs to be more holistic, comprehensive and sustainable vision to attain the substantiality than MDGs. These goals should be recognizing wants of ordinary people and for their growth and development economically, politically, socially and morally. SDGs are mainly based on the Moto of “leave no one behind” by recognizing the peace and security. It’s stating agenda is “there can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development”. Moreover, Goal 16 is addressing the peace and inclusive societies where justice for all and the accountability of institutions for all come into the context.

In UNDP’s Human development index report, Pakistan is at 150thranking with (HDI) of 0.5623 in the Globe. It is included in the most populated countries of the world with 6th position. Its youth is falling in the age bracket of 15 to 28 years but with no substantial growth. Pakistan’s concerns regarding gender discrimination is at its peak. It ranked 150 out of 153 for considering women in security, financial inclusion matters, and justice. Moreover, in 2017 a Sustainable Development Goals Index has reported the rankings of Pakistan at 122th number out of 157 countries. Pakistan fairly secured its position consisting of 55.6 points under the index of SDGs. Regional states are better in points as an average of 63.3 while India as an arch rival of Pakistan securing 58.1 and Bangladesh with 56.2 points. Unlike Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Pakistan ‘s parliament has adopted its agenda of national development under United Nation’s initiative of SDGs. National Assembly of Pakistan had established parliamentary secretariat on these goals. Later on this secretariat would monitor and report the activities of Provinces and regional levels in the Pakistan and its surrounding states. Furthermore, it has elected representatives of Planning Commission of Pakistan in order to look after the implementation concerns of SDGs. Meanwhile,

Moreover, sustainable development goal 16th is addressing the peace, stability, and good governance, rule of law, better justice system and betterment of institutions. Anarchic International system with no authority at the centre led the nations in the state of conflicts, lack in peace and insecure situations. Relationship between states in international politics is chaotic and dangerous. Moreover, destruction of moral values and norms has created ungovernable circumstances where states integrity is threatened. In this goal states are advised to cooperate in order to establish peace and security. Statistically by 2017 there are 68.5 million people has been in the worst conditions because of violence, violations of human rights and prosecution. While more than 10 million individuals are neglected for nationality and its concerned rights. Moreover, world has faced corruption and bribery over 1.26 trillion US dollar each year. More than 48 states having no laws for protection of women from violence and crime against them. These all points are seriously concerned with the Peace and security of World. This complete failure of countries for stability in international system can be judged fragility of institutions and justice system.

Furthermore, global challenges to these goals are influenced by many aspects ranging from social, economical, environmental and last but not the least demographical nature. In developing world where insecurity of every aspect of life has been is common thing. Developing nations faces population diversity, rapid urbanization, inequalities by the recipes of globalization and environmental degradation in contemporary times. Pakistan comes under the category of developing nation; it has dramatically been backward while implementing the agenda of 2030 of UN. Reasons behind this are shortage of time from now, lack of resources, inequalities, colossal conflict oriented situation in the form of aggressive neighbor like India. War torn state like Afghanistan is situated next to the western border which had been the source of conflict especially after the war on terror. And more situations have given set back to the progress of Pakistan from history up to the contemporary times. Moreover, Pakistan as a developing state even faced many structural challenges within domestic sphere and as far as implementation is concerned. Report in 2021 was launched by International monetary fund report; in this case the costs of GDP of states had been mentioned. For instance, expenditure on many aspects from SDG goals like number sixteenth would require 16 percent more of the states Gross domestic product. Its duration which is required for agenda 2030 has combined need of said percent from private and public institutions to boost functioning on sustainable development goals.

In a nutshell, it is inevitable to say that countries like Pakistan desperately need to focus on the agenda of 2030. In spite of really low ranking through world institutions, it should work hard to implement the focused targets and sub aspects of Sustainable development goals. All goals are interlinked with each other, so if there is slight improvement in a goal further goal shall be improved as itself. So just like goal sixteenth of Sustainable development goal which is about the peace, justice system and institutions would automatically change the positive result of others. Therefore, Pakistan faces severe challenges which are damaging each and every system inside the country, need fully fledged focus while dealing with SDGs.
