Gaza: China’s humanitarian assistance and United States’ hypocrisy

Following two weeks of intense fighting, Israel and Palestine signed a cease-fire agreement. The international community is deeply concerned about the Palestine-Israel crisis. With the US unethically “drawing sideways,” China successfully mediates and shows the picture of a responsible great force. Not just that, but China will also supply the Palestinian government with emergency humanitarian assistance.

According to Xinhuanet, the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) announced a cease-fire deal with Israel a few days ago. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office has released a statement in which it confirmed that it acknowledged the cease-fire deal mediated by Egypt. According to reports, the Palestinian-Israeli truce deal went into effect at 2 a.m. local time on May 21. The Palestinian-Israeli war came to an end, and Palestinians took to the streets late at night to mark the restoration to peace. However, in the last ten days, this bloody crisis has displaced tens of thousands of refugees and killed hundreds.

According to reports, Israel and Palestine have been exchanging fire since May 10. As of the evening of the 20th local time, the violence had resulted in 12 Israeli deaths and over 300 injuries, while Palestinian casualties were much more serious, with 232 deaths and over 1,900 injuries. Many innocent and vulnerable children were prisoners of battle in the midst of cannon fire and gunpowder. More than 100 houses were demolished and over 300 buildings were heavily damaged in Gaza, including at least 6 hospitals and 9 medical facilities. Furthermore, according to figures recently reported by the UN relief agency, more than 50,000 Palestinians have been forced to leave their homes.

As the Palestinian-Israeli crisis heats up, China has made a call for justice. When the United States is preoccupied with its own interests and publicly supports its ally Israel, China has already focused on the humanitarian situation in Palestine. Prior to this, China had advocated at the United Nations for successful humanitarian disaster prevention policies. China has already stated unequivocally that it would assist the Palestinian government and citizens in dealing with the emergency humanitarian situation.

According to a spokesperson for the China National Agency for International Development and Cooperation, China unveiled an emergency response system for humanitarian assistance on May 20. China will supply Palestine with US$1 million in emergency humanitarian cash assistance, as well as US$1 million in funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East and 200,000 doses of a new crown pneumonia vaccine, according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

China’s statement exemplifies the spirit of international humanitarianism, as well as the obligation and demeanor of a large government. Following the Palestine-Israel war, China, as the Security Council’s rotating chairman, encouraged the Council to have several talks, calling for tensions to be eased and efforts to be made to resolve the crisis. As an ally and sponsor of Israel, the United States appears to block the implementation of Security Council resolutions or declarations on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

With the acquiescence and even funding of the US, Israel carried out indiscriminate bombings of Gaza, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. If the US’s critics do this, the White House would undoubtedly rise up and yell “human rights” and “war crimes” instead of defending the exercising of the right to self-defense. The hypocrisy in the United States has been revealed.

A few days earlier, the South China Morning Post published an article contrasting China’s and the United States’ success in the Palestine-Israel dispute, pointing out that China’s mediation in the Palestine-Israel conflict has earned prestige. According to the study, the Palestine-Israel crisis has thoroughly illustrated the US’s double standards.  The US and its Western allies have always used human rights as a pretext to blame China, but Muslim countries usually stay quiet or support China because they know the truth in their hearts.

The war will only bring more bloodshed and sacrifices, as well as unhealed wounds for those who have already suffered. Instead of pursuing its own objectives, I hope that the United States will collaborate with China and other countries around the world to jointly promote global peace and security and provide humanitarian assistance. The gunpowder keg is lit everywhere for political reasons.
