Changing Security Dynamics

Before the emergence of corona virus, states were focused on enhancing military strength and nuclear capabilities. It was no where in the world’s leadership mind that such kind of infection would they face. Beginning from the city of Wuhan in China to the rest of world now, the pandemic has changed the overall security perspective. Now, every country is facing an enemy which cannot be defeated by using military means or using their economic strength, and geo-political clout. But, it needs medical experts and paramedics to defeat in the battle against corona virus pandemic.

Unfortunately, six months had been passed since it first emerged in China. Till then, medical scientists around the globe are working day and night to invent its cure, but all is not done yet. There are few reports that it can take a year or more when vaccine will be available in the world for curing the infection. In order to stem the exponential spread of virus, lockdown is being used widely all over the world as its primary remedial measure. There is no other way except strict lockdown for developed as well as developing world to contain the virus. All of their strength, power, and influence is futile against virus.

So, it has given birth to a concept of changing security dynamics amid coronavirus pandemic. Here, it doesn’t require military means, weapons, force, artilleries. All it needs sound health system, fully equipped with trained doctors, medical staff, and laboratories as front solider against the most deadliest enemy that is coronavirus. Otherwise, this ( corona virus) has an ability to penetrate deep into society within no time, and can cause widespread wreckage. Thus, to avoid such kind of human annihilation, every nation is struggling to contain the spread of virus till its standard cure is available to them.  To some extent, developed countries like Germany, Russia, Britain, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain, Italy, America, etc. have averted the increase of rising number of infections by introducing lockdown in their respective countries. However, developing countries are badly hit by pandemic both economically and in terms of human loss because they lack enough economic resource to go for long period of time in strict lockdown.

Additionally, global health emergency due to pandemic has forced countries to pay their heed to decaying health sector. Even, healthcare system in developed countries like United States, Britain, and Russia are under tremendous pressure due to biblical rise in reported cases. On some occasions hospitals lacked bed to accommodate the patients. For example, there is only 172,000 ventilators in America, against the need of 742,000. Again Britain have only 5900 ventilators against the need of 20,000 to deal with the respiratory patients. In Italy for every Ventilator, there are four acute respiratory patients. Although, situation in developing countries is dismal and horrific. Take the case of Pakistan, it has 2400 ventilators in total, and it needs 10000 more to accommodate respiratory patients.   Hence, they are accommodating two or more patients on single ventilator. Predictably, situation can be more shocking and horrific, If corona virus pandemic continued to rise in same speed.

Undoubtedly, the year 2020 in the annals of history would be remembered to a new kind of insecurity that is entirely change from all previous ones. By taking this pandemic in sight, the world leaders might have realized the kind of security they need in future beside military. It will be sensible choice, if countries begun to ameliorate the pathetic condition of health sector. This will help them in  future to fight against a virus like COVID-19.  It all needs to concentrate on bringing healthcare equal to national defense, not less than that.

Similarly, it is a  prime responsibility of the developed nations to come ahead and help poor nations to way out from this testing time. These less developed countries are more affected by pandemic because of meagre economic resources, decaying health sector, and  poorly trained medical staff. They are in dire need of medical equipment’s, funds, and moral support in time of health crisis. Further, internal and external conflicts among countries are equally responsible to change their attention from real issues like poor health condition.

Last but not the least, all nations must understand that corona virus is an existential threat to all. It’s a global health emergency, and it needs united response. For that purpose,  we should acknowledge this changed security dynamics, and need to take it as a war against the most fatal enemy.
