Capitalist Modernity and the Rise of Coronavirus

It has been prevailing propaganda against the “Socialism” since 1990s that Socialism cannot solve the masses’ political and economic issues in this modern project. But the outbreak of coronavirus is revealing how the far right President Donald Trump said that he would allow the government to ensure that the private sector can start up production of emergency medical supplies: “Trump announces proposal to take over private sector. The US president said he would call a federal provision allowing the government to marshal the private sector in response to the pandemic. Moreover the President said that he would sign an act aimed at giving himself the authority to direct domestic industrial production ‘in case we need it’. It compels the far right to announce some elements of communism by necessities. On other hand, this modern project of capitalism has destroyed not only the workers’ surplus value around the world, but it also has destroyed the natural ecosystem of our planet.

The excessive and brutal use of nature resources by multinational companies/ corporations (MNCs) like Amazon, always destroyed the beauty and charm of eco-system. Influential thinker Rousseau said, “Modern man, was tirelessly engaged in cleansing nature, the earth, human souls, and learning of poetry, rooting out every trace of sacred, spoiling the memory of all uplifting incidents and people, and the world of all bright ornament”. As we can see Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s government has damaged the world’s largest rain forest in an entirely different universe of magnitude. Destruction of these forests also displaced indigenous tribes that have lived in those forests for centuries. The capitalist modernity, on one side, has been displacing the unfortunate masses from their own localities, while on the other side, on alarge scale capitalist corporations have perpetuated their brutal economic flows across the bordersfor satisfying their unquenched thirst for sucking the poor people’s blood.

On the contrast, few governments on the pretext of the current coronavirus pandemic, disallow the poor migrants to enter their countries, as we have witnessed in the case of Greek. Interestingly it is considered the violation of International border law. The people’s hard work and labor’s surplus is being exploited by those capitalists who wouldnever, otherwise, get permission while crossing their country border and exploiting their fundamental resources. Precisely, it is not the right pace for the world to focus only on human protection from the virus but it must be noted and focused, in political domain, the various viruses that effect on plants as well. Because these plants give us fruits/food (as plants are the primary food producers) which keep us alive. WWF have reported that 60% of wild animal population have declined since 1970. The report further revealed that humanly consumption should be blamed for this destruction. Report also shared that world’s 83% fresh water ecosystem is eliminating.

Beside all the dangers it carries, there are some positive consequences of the coronavirus: as result of travel restrictions and massive halt to business activities, pollution levels are dropping all over the world and the environment is thriving. Elsewhere in Italy, data from the European Space Agency (ESA) has revealed a distinct drop in the air pollutant Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) between the months of January and March, when coronavirus first took hold. In Venice, following the reduction of water traffic from boats and cruise ships, people are witnessing that the usually murky waters are becoming crystal clear. Even more surprisingly, dolphins have started to swim in the canals, accompanied by schools of fish and even swans. After all, we are noticing the destruction of nature and animal species by the capitalist modernity which seems to have completely failed to intact the world peaceful. The current coronavirus pandemic situation is presenting salient internal contradiction of capitalism. As Karl Marx has argued that sometimes self-destruction of the system happens due to the internal contradiction. But in most instances, he looks on crises as the movements of reconstruction for capital rather than of collapse. The overall situation reveals that, it is high time to choose the alternative or to wait for dying of such pandemic viruses.
