With the very recent meeting held in St. Petersburg on August 8 last between Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan - the only high-level meeting after the attempted coup in Turkey and the attempted murder of the Turkish leader, a coup which Russia first reported to Turkey and then strongly condemned - a new phase of post-Soviet geopolitics has begun.

Although some US military decision-makers have recently said that the air raids on Sirte are to be considered "purely tactical" - as also General Petraeus stated on August 4 last - the US operations in Libya which started on August 1 last have evident strategic importance.

A missile was launched from a submarine by the North Korean Navy a few days ago, targeting Japan. The launch of the ballistic missile took place on Wednesday, August 24, just before 6.00 a.m. (local time). According to South Korean sources, the missile was launched from the Northern coast of the country and reached Japan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ), after flying over 300 nautical miles.

As Aeschylus said, “in war, truth is the first casualty”. However, every civilization has its own truth or rather its "myth of truth", just to quote Nietzsche. Hence how can we apply our non-empiricist concept of true and false to the current war in Syria, which is basically the battle for future hegemony in the Middle East? Therefore we must study, above all, the social media, which have very useful characteristics for truth and its contemporary "concealment".

The OSCE Ministerial Council elected Italy to chair the Organization in 2018. The consensus decision was taken on July 27 last by the current 57 members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). And there is nothing to prevent that - by changing the Statute - also “observer” countries may add to them, as currently happens for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Since July 25 last, Assad’s Syrian Arab Army has hammered the Israeli front of the Golan Heights with its artillery, often logistically supported by Russia. The goal is obviously to prompt a response by the Jewish State and make it wage a war directly against Syria. A pointless suicide for Israel, a return to the old and useless lines of the Cold War in the Middle East.

In 1909, at the beginning of what was to be defined as “the short century”, the Italian Futurists said "We stand on the far promontory of centuries!" Today simultaneity, another futuristic concept, has reached around the world and, in particular, all people in every social class. What is simultaneous influences all our myths, behaviors and values - it is not just a mere economic or financial transaction. In fact, the World Wide Web connects, almost instantly, huge masses of poor and rich people, as well as elites.

The new relationship for the exchange of intelligence data, which had been established between Russia and Israel, is currently in danger. The most clear sign of this bilateral crisis can be seen in the mild reaction to the Israeli protests concerning the Russian sales or transfers to the Hezbollah of military equipment (often advanced one). The polemic was also rekindled in the last telephone conversation between Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Putin, last Saturday, July 23.

1)France effectively cooperated with the Bashar el Assad’ Syria and the Russian Aerospace Forces in the war against Daesh/Isis. President Hollande sent the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. This happened while France was also operating in the US-led operation Inherent Resolve.

The Turkish Armed Forces are fighting both in the PKK Kurdish area and in the framework of the Inherent Resolve operation led by the United States against ISIS. This partially explains the scarce amount of ground forces available for the July coup against President Recep Tayyp Erdogan and his AKP. The "Justice and Development Party", founded by Erdogan himself, resulted from the merger of various Islamist and conservatives parties in 2001.
