Kumari, literally translating to a ‘pre-pubescent virgin’, is also the name of the living goddess in Nepal chosen at a very young age. They belong to the Shakya caste of the Newars, the same caste Buddha was believed to have hailed from.
A leading national daily in Nepal recently posted about an art exhibition targeted towards helping the Rohingya community. While this sounded far-fetched at first, it later turned out to be about the 200 Rohingyas in Northern Kathmandu living in abysmal conditions in slums in leaky tents during the monsoon without blankets to prepare for the oncoming winter.

The day Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sherif was invited to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swerving-in ceremony was the first policy mistake. Behind the scenes, Modi’s invitation to our disputed neighbor did not seem to account for the impact on across the border in Pakistan. Keeping the complex relationship in a boiling pot would not have given great diplomatic leverage to India’s foreign policy, but would have been a small political victory to Modi’s domestic politics.
