Latvia along with Lithuania and Estonia is at the junction of the geopolitical interests of the United States (representing NATO) and Russia. In fact Latvia has turned into a buffer zone. This position became especially acute in the time of current crisis and on the eve of the Russian-Belarusian exercise “Zapad-2017.”
On Wednesday NATO and Russia have got a new reason to argue and make claims to each other. NATO posted an 8-minute online documentary feature video, glorifying activity of the Baltic partisan movement “Forest Brothers”.
To put it mildly, the current system of international security and European security in particular doesn't work any longer. Germany's Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said, that "European security is at risk unless a new arms control agreement is in force". Almost every European country admits this fact either. But it is far easier to admit than to take real actions. The international security will remain a dream unless a new system is developed.
