In a recent document of the European Authority for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, released earlier this June, stock is taken of the shortcomings in the EU foreign policy and intelligence system. Meanwhile, according to the document, the European Union should continue to support the political and economic reforms in the Western Balkans.

Clearly the title Europe designates the unity of a spiritual life and creative activity--no matter how inimical the European nations may be toward each other, still they have a special inner affinity of spirit that permeates all of them and transcends their national differences… There is an innate entelechy that thoroughly controls the changes in the European image and directs it toward an ideal image of life and of being. The spirited telos of the European in which is included the particular telos of separate nations and individual persons, has an infinity; it is an infinite idea toward which in secret the collective spiritual becoming, so to speak, strives.”   --Edmund Husserl

Can the EU welcome and integrate the immigrant “other”?

Nowadays this urgent question is often asked by historians, sociologists, and political scientists. It has given rise to a plethora of books and academic conferences on the subject (see below for a sample). In the light of the events of the recent “refugee European crisis” the conclusions and prognosis are, more often than not, rather inconclusive and ineffective. In the short analysis that follows I’d like to examine the reasons for the deficiency, namely that the philosophy of religion is often ignored, if not downright excluded from the diagnosis, thus ending up with the wrong prognosis.

Currently Great Britain’s annual net budgetary transfers to the European Union amount to 13 billion pounds. In various forms, every year the European Union injects 7 billion pounds into the British economy.

Humanity’s achievements in science and technology and innovative techniques have been on the rise since the industrial revolution, giving rise to new heights in innovative methodology. From airplanes, electricity, rail engines to remote technological innovations, computers and advanced mobiles, man has made tremendous strides in all walks of life, making life both easy and complicated at the same time.

According to reports,, European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker is meeting President Vladimir Putin in Russia in June in the first visit by a senior EU official since it imposed sanctions against Moscow in 2014.

No one is really fine in the European gas chamber but - just to paraphrase Orwell - someone is finer than the others. It is Germany, as you can easily imagine.

Earlier this year, the German industrial production recorded no annual growth and consumer confidence was at very low levels.

It passed a year after the last open armed conflict in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia – FYROM (former Socialist Republic of Macedonia as one of six federal republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) in May 2015 that was just an expected continuation of constant tensions between the ethnic Albanians and the Macedonian Slavs during the last quarter of century.

And The Weak Suffer What They Must? Europe’s Crisis and America’s Economic Future. by Yanis Varoufakis (April 2016)

“The strong do what they will, and the weak suffer what they must”--Thucydides

This book, just out, is a must read for anybody in any way interested in the history, the cultural identity, the present crisis, and the future destiny of the European Union. It is almost prophetic, a sort of Cassandra warning, predicting, but always rigorously logically and rationally, how the ongoing drama of the EU, of which he was a participant for a short while, will eventually end, and not only for Greece or the EU, but the whole economic global apparatus as presently constituted, unless urgent reforms and measures are adopted to remedy a deficit of Democracy and a lack of transparency.

An interesting thing has happened in the West right in United Kingdom as a Muslim gets elected as mayor London even as Islamophobia is in the peak as EU continues to block a European Turkey from entering the European Union as a legitimate member and in the US poll campaign with Trump seeking to deny Muslims entry to his ‘motherland’ or rather ‘fatherland’.
